This type lay is that in Enciclopedia Italiana (1949). The box with + represents a cross. Note that J and U are in their alphabetic sequence, unlike UK/US cases. Note also the position of j and k, and that W is in the lower case bay. The # box is for spazi fini (1½pt). The other spacing is spazi mezzani (3pt) quadratini (6pt) quadratoni (12pt), forti and quadrati. The empty case configuration is Cassa Tipografica.

An earlier edition (1937) of the Enciclopedia labels the Cassa Alta and Cassa Bassa as if separate cases, and Lockwood in 1894 showed two completely separate Upper and Lower cases. However, the more recent case shown by Hostettler in 1963 is again a single case.
