This English typecase configuration matches that proposed by Johnson: Typographia (1824). The e box has been reduced, and two additional small boxes thereby added. The box next to the l box is not made into the usual two small boxes, but the usual t box is subdivided (to bring all the spacing boxes adjacent to each other). The configuration is almost the same as in MacKellar: The American Printer (5th ed 1870), except that MacKellar still has the normal one large e box, and at the left end of the 4th (or 3rd main) row, Mackellar divides the first box horizontally into two (for x and q).

Johnson's lay is shown as Johnson Proposed New.
