This English layout is shown by Johnson: Typographia (1824), as being the lay after the double letters were discarded. It also moves the numerals down a row. It is very similar to Smith's No.3 lay of 1755, apart fom re-ordering some reference signs, swapping U and J, and, of course, omitting the long s ligatures and adding some rule and ç. Note that this upper case still holds the letter k. The lay is very similar to Timperley's of 1838 except that he substitutes fractions for ç and hair spacing, and £ for em dash. Johnson's companion lower case is the Johnson New lay, and his earlier upper is the Luckombe lay.

Note that the boxes with A,B, etc are small caps. The ¦ box represents a single dagger, and ¦¦ a double dagger. The empty case configuration is that of Moxon, and Luckombe (1771), Southward (1882), Mackellar (1885), Barnhart Bros & Spindler's News (1890s), Stephenson Blake & Co (1922), Caslon (1925) etc.
