This typecase configuration matches that of Lockwood: American Dictionary of Printing and Bookmaking (1894, reprinted Gale 1967), as in use by New Yorker Staats-Zeitung. It is also shown by Southward: Modern Printing (2nd ed 1904 and still 6th ed 1933). In his earlier Practical Printing (eg 1882), Southward shows MacKellar's German Lower case, rather than this later modification, which has split the h and o boxes (to allow thin and mids to be added), and widened the box under 0 and 9 (for w). BBS (1890s) show a variant U.S. German, with only the divided o and r boxes (but divided vertically rather than horizontally), and De Vinne in 1904 shows the same, but without the wide w box.
