This English case configuration is shown by Stower, The Printer's Grammar (1808), and by Johnson: Typographia (1824) and Hansard: Typographia (1825). It is intended for larger quantities of type (or for storing surplus quantities of type), and is wider and longer than the normal case. The case does not provide for founts with the long s ligatures, and so needs less boxes than the earlier Smith (1755) Fount case. However, unlike Smith's proposed case, Stower does still have some small boxes, which was one of the reasons Smith found such cases unsatisfactory, as the sorts could be both difficult to see, and difficult to remove, given the extra depth in the case. However, Stower has widened several other boxes for example for b and l. The lay of his case is Stower Fount.
