LETTERPRESS WORKSHOPS

Albion Hand Press

The Alembic Press is occasionally able to make its facilities available for printing workshops, and following the pattern of the last nine years, it is delighted to offer its very successful five-day letterpress workshop again in 2009.

The Press is located in the south of England, some 50 miles from London and eight miles south of Oxford. It has a spacious printshop situated in a thirteenth century stone barn, equipped with an Albion iron hand press, a Farley and a Vandercook cylinder proof press, various table-top platens and a wide range of metal and wood typefaces. The course will give hands-on instruction in the use of each of these style of presses, in the hand setting of type and blocks, and the production of a book or broadsheet. There will be a maximum of five people, which allows students to have individual instruction, yet work at their own pace, and also explore their own particular interests should they so desire. The workshop can also include a slide lecture on early printed books, a visit to a nearby printing museum or Arts & Crafts museum, and/or an introduction to casting on the Monotype, depending upon the wishes of the participants.

The workshop will run each day from 10am to 4pm, and will be

Monday 4 May to Friday 8 May.

The fee is £220 per person, inclusive of tuition, basic materials, tea/coffee and lunch. A workshop will only run if at least three people register. To reserve a place, please send a deposit of £50 or US$100 (cheque payable to Claire Bolton), which will be refunded if the workshop fails to run.
