This typecase construction matches the Greek Lower of Johnson: Typographia (1824). The case has 52 boxes. The companion Upper Case is Greek Upper.

Savage shows a similar Greek Old lower case in 1841, except that he does not horizontally divide one of the tau boxes. Johnson uses this divided box for spacing, but as an undivided box it used to be for the alternative form of tau (ie there were two tau boxes side by side). Later, the number of smaller boxes, ie zeta, gamma, tau, final sigma, and pi, become single larger boxes, eg Southward in 1882, who then horizontally divides the rho box to allow for the alternative form. Savage's New Lower case is an intermediate, still retaining the two tau boxes.
