The lay is that illustrated in Lockwood: American Dictionary of Printing and Bookmaking (1894) as derived from Bachmann (nd). Bauer (1917) shows a very similar lay, though without the reference signs and for example with q and s (a form of etc.) in different boxes, h and l swapped, z and x swapped, j moved, and no extra divided box above w but with one below Z. There are also slightly different Gaskell and Schriften lays and construction.

Note that the types are Fraktur, and not Roman as shown here. The box with -- is em dash and the ¦ is a dagger. The | is a long s. There are two boxes holding overflow characters. The empty case is Lockwood.
