This U.S. typecase lay is shown in Cleveland Type Foundry, Catalogue and Price List of Type and Material, 1893 and Catalogue and Book of Specimens of Type Faces and Printing Material and Machinery, 1895 and American Type Founders, Pacific Coast Blue Book - Specimens of Type, Printing Machinery, Printing Material, 1896. The empty case is Palmer & Rey.

The lay shows quads, em and en spaces, 3 to em (thick) spaces and thin spaces. The thin spaces do not distinguish between 4 to em (mids) and 5 to em (thins), but obviously this could be done as there are two boxes devoted to thin spaces. The lay does not seem to allow for hair spaces.
