This U.S. typecase construction is shown by De Vinne: The Practice of Typography - Modern Methods of Book Construction (1904 and 1914) as being a useful case for figures for tabular work. The case lay is De Vinne Figure.

The construction is similar to the English figure case shown by Southward (1904) as manufactured by Caslon, apart from having three less boxes in the fourth row from the top, and one more box in the third row.
