This English typecase configuration is shown by Ullmer, Revised Illustrated Price List of New Machinery and Materials in 1902. It is not quite the same as the Improved Double Case of Caslon in 1897 and others up to Stephenson Blake in 1989, or other Improved versions, as it has three less divided boxes in the left hand bay of the lower case, with a total lower case of only 50 boxes. The case is divided into three bays, with the lower on the left and centre, and upper on the right. It has only six rows of upper case boxes (42 boxes in all) and thus as Ullmer claim, it allows more space for upper case characters, and is most useful for Scripts, Italics, Clarendons (bolds), etc. (as these faces do not have small capitals).
