This English layout is shown by Jacobi: Printing (5th edition 1913 and 6th ed 1919) as Caslon's new registered lay. However, the same lay shown by Caslon in Printing Types & Catalogue of Materials (1925) gives greater accommodation for body caps by increasing the box widths in the right hand bay. Since this was the main reason for this new lay, it is possible that Jacobi's illustration has simply overlooked the change. The figures are moved into the Lower case, so as to be closer to the compositor's hand, and some of the less-used lower case characters, such as q, are moved into the Upper case. The companion Lower is Caslon New Lower.

The boxes with A, etc are small caps. The box ¦ is really a single and ¦¦ a double dagger. The box «» is really top, middle and bottom 3 piece brace. The { is a 2em brace, { a 3em and { a 4em brace. Similarly -- is a 2em dash, --- a 3em and ---- a 4em dash (rule). The empty case configuration is the traditional Upper of Moxon, etc.
