This English layout is the Improved lay given by Lindley in Appendix 1 of Lindley & Maggs: Basic Printing - Letterpress for the Beginner (rev ed 1983). The improvement on the earlier version is the dropping of the small caps, adding in spacing, and not having more than one character in each box. It combines upper and lower case in one upper case, rather than in a double case.

The empty configuration is that of Moxon, and Johnson (1824), Mackellar (1885), Southward (1887), Barnhart Bros & Spindler's News (1890s), Stephenson Blake & Co (1922), Miller & Richard (same period), Caslon (1925) etc.

Other empty cases
ie with the boxes left blank
