Modello Francese

This Italian case corresponds to the type lay shown by Gallavrini: Tipocomposizione (1966) as part of a course of instruction published by Associazione Culturale Progresso Grafico, Torino. The actual lay is Francese. The case is the same as the Romano also shown by Gallavrini, but as a photo rather than a line drawing, and with a central partition, like the similar case shown by Enciclopedia Italiana. That is, the upper case central partition is not offset to the right. It is not clear whether this offset is a stylistic device, or reflects an actual case. Apart from this offset, Gallavrini's lay fits both his cases.

Note that there are effectively four rows of fourteen boxes in the upper case. Gallavrini shows two other cases, Veneto with four rows of sixteen boxes, and Napoletano with four rows of fifteen boxes, both with a central partition, and two others, Siciliano with four rows of fifteen, and Rossi with four rows of nineteen boxes, both with an off-centre partition.
